The First Pegeen

Viking Theatre

The First Pegeen tells of the love affair between J.M. Synge and Molly Allgood, one of Irish theatre’s most endearing and enduring stories.

By George O’Brien

Directed by Michael James Ford

Starring: Aisling O'Mara

Molly made her name as the first Pegeen Mike in Synge’s masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World. Synge died from cancer at the age of 37 before he could marry his feisty and outspoken fiancée. The First Pegeen is a lyrical, humorous and heartbreaking portrait of Molly on the day of her beloved’s funeral.

It is the first stage play by the award-winning US-based Irish writer and academic, George O’Brien, and the 2019 Bewley’s production received critical and popular acclaim.
