St Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport's resident and perennial theatre creators, presents The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh in a live theatre recording at Westival 2020 virtual festival.
The play is set in Connemara and tells the story of Maureen Folen, a lonely woman, and Mag, her manipulative and ageing mother. Mag's interference in Maureen's first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific.
This play won 4 Tony awards for Druid Theatre Company in 1998 when first staged on Broadway. St Patrick’s Drama Group , having first brought its hilarious comedy, “A Wake in the West” to the Irish American Heritage Center, Chicago in 2006 for sold-out performances then returned to the IAHC in a riveting revival production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane on February 20th, 21st 2020.
The group entered the play in The Martin McDonagh International Festival in Perm Russia , held 1st-7th of October 2020. Westport received a special Jury Award. The video of The Beauty Queen of Leenane was viewed by the Russian audience, together with plays from Spain, Italy, Holland, Estonia, Ukraine and Belarus.
