Poetry at The New Theatre

Welcome to an evening of poetry at The New Theatre!

Featuring incredible talent based in Ireland and Ukraine, join us for a night of unique performances in the intimate New Theatre. We will be joined by Hazel Hogan, Maks Lyzhov, HK Ní Shioradáin, and Samuel Yakura.

Hazel Hogan
Hazel is a poet from Dublin. Her poem ‘Grangegorman’ is studied as part of the Junior Cert syllabus. Her poetry was submitted into the Irish Poetry Reading Archive as part of the UCD digital library. She’s been published in The Irish Times and RTE. She studies English Literature and Creative Writing.

Maks Lyzhov
Maks is a poet, artist, translator, film director, and Journalist born in 1983 in Brovari, which translates as “brewers”. He studied at KMA and since then, mostly lives in Kyiv.
He is the author of 4 published poetry collections: "Flood of the Soul” | “Повінь душі” (1996); “Mine of Pain Extraction” | “Болевидобувна шахта” (2002); “Use Once and Destroy” (2020, Berlin); “As Much As Possible” | “Якомога” (2023).
In 2016, directed his first short film entitled “70 Streets”. Included in film distribution throughout the country within the “Ukrainian Experiment” program, it had numerous screenings in Ukraine, as well as abroad (Berlin, Gothenburg, Hong Kong, etc.).
In 2018, participated in publication of “Play the Piano Drunk Like a Percussion Instrument Until the Fingers Begin to Bleed a Bit” – as a translator and author of the project dedicated to the first poetry collection by Charles Bukowski in the Ukrainian language.
After the russian invasion of Ukraine, served in the army and plans to return there.

HK Ní Shioradáin
HK is a multi-disciplinary artist from Ireland.  They are a bilingual poet and lyricist, writing in Irish and English. They were selected for Poetry Ireland’s Introductions 2022 and won the Máire Mac an tSaoi Award for their poetry. Recent poetic and lyrical work has featured in Poetry Ireland, RTÉ, Dublin Book Festival, International Literature Festival Dublin, Aneas, Irish Writer Centre, South Dublin Libraries, Meath Library Publications, and more.
They also compose, music direct, and sound design for film, theatre, musical theatre, radio, and bands, and they are eager to explore the intersection of poetry within these artistic mediums. Their debut spoken word show, which heavily features live music performed by HK, was commissioned by Creative Ireland’s Incubation Award and Axis Assemble. They were selected for Rough Magic SEEDS 2023/24 and they are the resident sound designer at Lemon Soap Productions. They have a BA in English Literature and Film Studies from Trinity College Dublin, and they have a Certificate in Music Composition for Games from Griffith College Dublin.

Samuel Yakura
Samuel is a Nigerian Born Poet, Playwright and Performing Artist resident in Ireland. He's a multiple-time Slam Champion both in Nigeria and Ireland, winning Slam competitions like ALS, OxFam, and Talkatives. He's a member with the Wearegriot Poetry Collective based in Dublin. He has done commissioned works for the likes of Summer in the city, Poetry Ireland, Dublin Fringe, Adrian Brinkerhoff Foundation, IMMA, Gaisce Awards, International Literature Festival, Dublin Book festival amongst many others. His Sold out Debut Poetry Play "The Perfect Immigrant" successfully premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2022 with 4star ratings from Art Review and Buzz. His work reflects heavily on observing the human condition, relationships and interaction within society and culture
